1st IB Week – Open-Minded – 03/25

„They understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities. They are accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points of view, and are willing to grow from the experience“

„Openness of mind means accessibility of mind to any and every consideration that will throw light upon the situation that needs to be cleared up, and that will help determine the consequences of acting this way or that“

John Dewey

Curiosity is the base condition for an open-minded person. Through openness, we assume a receptive attitude toward life and worldview. An open-minded person is interested in other people and foreign cultures and enjoys learning from them for their own lives. Openness is an essential prerequisite for learning and growth, showing interest in all connections, causes and effects. As a school, we want to stimulate the natural instinct of curiosity appropriately and thereby use it for the sustainable learning of our students.

Openness is not a passive attitude, so it differs from tolerance. Whoever is open is also willing to adapt and change. That is, he or she is ready to jump on their own shadow. This IB attribute is a guarantee that we can see the world differently, discovering hidden connections and thus gaining new knowledge.

A receptive person usually speaks several languages and mastering several languages, in turn, develops and requires openness.

Those who are open can more easily adopt a world view from many perspectives: the subjective type becomes more empathic and the objective type can reason even better. It is easy for an open-minded person to get into different situations in any setting and quickly find a conclusion for the benefit of all involved.

Indeed, the open-world attitude will be required of your children as future leaders, for in a modern and globalized world, they will be increasingly in touch with members of other cultures, thereby helping to promote effective communication. Openness will also help identify new opportunities in your future work, visualize and come up with new ideas, as well as develop plans for your business.
